On The Road to Maui # 21 The North Shore :0(

Cynthia and I Found this great beach last night just before sunset…Its on the North shore of Maui near the Airport…most tourists don’t know about it…it is so isolated . Today I plan to walk about seven miles of it,its loaded with palm trees and amazing blue water teaming with fish. I figured out I can walk to the small village of Paia and cynthia will pick me up later or heck I will just walk back in the Moon light..Beach Bum Mick Out :

Well that was the head line I posted on facebook 5 days ago and yes I did follow up the next day with my walk, maybe I should have consulted my good friend and trail guide Jungle John first after all this is his island so to speak.

Cynthia dropped me off at the harbor with my backpack loaded with food and lots of water. Water is a big part of hiking on maui for obvious reasons. On long hikes I carry about 2 large bottles ( 3 liters) may seem heavy at first but like the food it joins the rest of natures recycling program.

I walked through the harbor industrial area till I found a pathway leading to the white sandy beach we had seen the previous evening. Once on the soft white sand I removed my Clarks Wave Sandals ( Best sandals in the world beat Keene`s and Birkenstocks any day) to let the sand massage my feet. Did you know that walking bare foot is extremely healthy,it connects you to the natural magnetic electrons of the earth......and has amazing benefits read the article on this web site...

Walking Barefoot Promotes Good Health‬

Ok! on with my blog..... As I walked though the breaking morning surf I noticed a lot of homeless tarped dwellings just of the beach. These are fairly common on the Hawaiian Islands and in my experience I have never had any trouble with my fellow homeless brothers after all most of us are one paycheck away from the street or beach. I believe poverty is a state of mind not the balance in your check book. So I waved to those I could see ,they returned with the island shack-ra. I did see some some meth addicts my heart goes out to them, Jesus loves them just as much as the wealthy man.

So on I walked ,about ½ a mile on I came to a large Kite surfing beach. Kite surfing is big on Maui, they come from all over the globe to the North shore to catch the wind in a big adrenaline rush. So I began smiling waving as I passed by,no one returned my greeting at first I thought they were preoccupied, but when people would deliberate look the other way I quickly realized I was not welcome. This repeated right up to the next beach which was the windsurfing beach and sad to say same virus there. By this time I realized they all thought I was homeless because I was wearing a back pack. Apparently this area is full of homeless.

Well I decided to find a quiet beach about a mile on,
find a nice spot and have a break. I sat down to watch the blue breaking waves and the Stepford community dance with King Neptune. Some of those kite surfers were catching some air up to twenty feet. People would occasionally pass me by, I would greet them and I m not kidding they would look the other way. At one point I stood up and said “ Come on really”
If I had been wearing “Da Kine” or “Rip Curl” water sports wear I would have fit right in. Its sad to see how shallow some people have become because of fear of what they think Homeless people represent.

The next beach was bordered by wealthy homes , yes same sickness, one guy who I passed within 3 feet of his face and he totally ignored me. We had seen him with some others the previous evening and they had ignored Cynthia. This was a first for me on Maui ever. So Glad this is only a small part of the island and if I don’t want to be bugged grab a back pack and go walk about in cold-ville.

I did talk with 3 people One Hawaiian Fisherman who called me brother and a Homeless Hawaiian guy called Ken who kept me company while I waited for Cynthia to pick me up and One French woman a Kite Surfer who was very friendly, got to love my fellow Europeans. Oh, Yes, I nearly forgot an elderly Canadian Kite Surfer named Bob who is on Maui for a month got to love our Norhtern neigbours Ay!
All in all it was an eyeopening experience after so much of the great Hawaiian aloha Spirit.

So If you want alone time on Maui grab a back pack and head to the North shore of Maui to be alone in the crowd.

Cheers Michael :0)

On the Road to Maui # 20

Christmas and Turkey day in Shang-ra-la :0)

I remember watching Elvis Presley movies back in Ireland in the Early seventies that were filmed on location in the Hawaiian Islands and thinking I would love to live there on the warm sandy shores lined with tall Palm trees and yes surrounded by native women in grass skirts, hey I,m a guy :0).

This Thanksgiving we were invited to join some locals for afternoon dinner. There were two Hawaiian girls playing ukulele as we sang Christmas songs, behind the musicians was a large picture window that commanded a view of the Pacific ocean below through tall palm trees and I suddenly remembered my child hood memories and thanked God that almost 40 years later I was living in paradise and yes married to a beautiful brown Argentinian island girl!!!!!.

December 7th 1941 is a date that will be remembered through out history as The Japanese bombing of Pearl harbor but what most people do not remember or may not know is that December 7th 1943 at the height of WW2 Two Navy dauntless dive bombers collided over Maui on Maneuvers. As the planes hurtled towards the ground one of the bombs detached and fell to earth among a detachment of Marines also on training exercises. Twenty US marines were killed,it was one of the worst air disasters in Maui History.

The last few weeks have been slow, majorly uneventful by mainland American standards, you know fast paced heart rushing adrenaline fueled movie blockbuster excitement. I think super heroes fly out here to retire and blend in with the rest of normal humanity.

When I last wrote Cynthia and I had become sub-contractors with a Maui Condo Cleaning company. Well it turns out the owner is extremely paranoid( Thinks I will take their mop buckets and sell them to the Chinese heehaw) and decided not to contract with us.

Cynthia is now working part time with “The Boys and Girls Club” of America and I,m focusing on a project that God has brought to my attention that will benefit the foundation of our future greatly. More on this at a later date, for now lets just call it “The Secret”...no ,no nothing to do with “The Secret” or “The laws of attraction” that is sweeping other minds - this is an “Irish Secret” and no it has nothing to do with Murphy s Law much more powerful my dear mac-fly.

Guapa Smoothies will launch soon when the last of Cynthia`s equipment arrives, I have no doubt in my mind that it will be great addition to the small business community here on Maui.Money will be one of the obvious fringe benefits, but more importantly friendships, personal growth along with the freedom Cynthia experiences from the world of bing self employed. I have been a part of that great mind set for close to 14 years now , God has greatly used it to build my Character and not a human empire built on sand.

Last night we watched another great Sunset on the beach with our friend Andy sharing stories as the moon rose to light up the waters of the south Pacific like glass along with greatly illuminating the white crests of the breaking waves on the soft sandy shore line in harmony with the ocean breeze rustling the tall palm trees ,it was a priceless moment and we drank it in for all it was worth!

So for the moment this is all he wrote, have a wonderful Christmas where ever this finds you and thank you so much for reading.

Cheers Michael :0)

Ten Days in Bed on Maui :0)

On The Road to Maui # 19

Well it’s been about 3 weeks since I last wrote. It’s been an interesting time, we are now 62 days on the island and will soon beat my last trip of 67! Yes we are still at the teepee and have had just about every bite from all that crawls and soars. No, I have not had a centipede bite like poor old Cynthia. She is still recovering from that awful night. Apparently the effects last about two weeks; she is now at the itching and Nausea stage. As for me I think the local mosquito population had a meeting, declared me a local and are dining on toruist instead.

I will not say it’s been an easy 62 days actually 90 odd, we left Wilsonville on August 30 and hit the road with the Bike and car sept 7. We have not slept in a bed together with the exception of two nights in motels coming down the I-5 to Sandeigo and two nights on a comfortable airbed at Steve and Susanne’s in Sandeigo before we flew out here.

Pulling up stakes and loading the camel to venture into the unknown is not easy, but I would not miss it for the world. It’s been 29 years since this Irish boy jumped a ship to leave his native Ireland to see the world through Gods eyes. The culture’s, people and places I have seen and lived among are amazing. I have met countless trials and faced many giants mostly within myself, the hardest ones I believe. But all in all it’s been worth it you have to take the good with bad you can`t have light without darkness.

Cynthia left her home at a young age to leave her footprints all over Europe, and then journeyed into the Middle East including the Western Sahara. I would love to go back with her to the Sahara and cross it on BMW 1200 GS Enduro of course I will probably end up being towed out by a Camel and become fast friends with Ben Haddam the herder. We have both been yet still are missionaries, like Moses we don’t know where we are going either? All we known is that nothing is permanent except Heaven and that is our final destination :0)

On The Local front we will shortly have a brand spanking new Generator for Cynthia`s Smoothie business. Cynthia`s Mother is blessing us with it,she has been a great supporter of our new venture and storms heaven daily on our behalf. I look forward to the day we are in a situation where we can put her up over here as she will love talking and sharing Jesus with the locals.

The last 10 days I have been confined to my cot with a local virus and then to top it all I put my back out and as if to add insult to injury My charger on my laptop burnt out so no Writing or internet. So I read “Bill O Reilly’s” book “Killing Jesus”, while I’m not to impressed with him as a talk show host the book was well researched and a quick read. He dealt mainly with the historical events that were occurring up to and during that period,a must read for history lovers.

Well folks I’m writing this on Cynthia`s Sony Vaio!!! Please don’t tell my Mac friends…yup I miss my Mac! a new charger will be arriving shortly.

Finlay tomorrow begins the official launch of Celtic Cleaning Maui. Cynthia and I will be sub - Contracting with a local Condo cleaning company in Kehie. The part I love is when work is done the beach is just yards away. Our dream of being self-employed together is Finlay taking shape. So Guapa Smoothies Cynthia`s brain child and my company of 14 years will move on together!!

Ok, That’s all for now…thanks for reading we are off to the beach to bask in the sun…Oh, Yesterday as I was snorkeling and was coming back up though the warm water from  the pacific floor a large Turtle swam like a submarine over my head. At first the dark shadow that blocked the sunlight nearly flushed my toilet as I thought it was dinner at Eight with Jaws. But when I saw that friendly face I was filled with awe and swam alongside for as long as I could hold my breath, it was an amazing moment what a wonderful creator we serve :0)

Cheers Michael !!!

On The Road to Maui # 17 No Going back :0(

On The Road to Maui # 17 No Going back :0(

Today has to be about the loneliest day I have had in years. Not lonely for Human contact ,but lonely deep inside my soul. Its as though God has drawn us out here to Maui to be totally alone with him. Honestly right now no human contact would fill this void. I have been in many places, walked away from perfectly stable situations to follow Gods leading, preached on city streets ,seen people come to Jesus, get healed, the list is endless. But never have I felt as lonely as I do today, I`m not a needy person,I love my own company and yes I do love and like myself most of the time hahaha :0)

Here we are on one of the most beautiful Diverse islands on Gods green earth and honestly I really could not care less, scenery cannot fill a void or give you true peace, quiet ,rest maybe? I could try hugging a tree but the forrest service would have a fit if I tried to dig it up and take it for a walk.

Athletes who run marathons about midway through will hit a wall that they have to push through in order to carry on to the finish line, many quit at this point. Today I guess I,m hitting my personal wall and if someone was to give me a free ticket to home I would be tempted to fly. But alas we sold everything ,left everything to come here so there is no home over there anymore but right now where are hearts are. At this moment its a coffee shop in Safeway in Wailuku, well at least we wont go hungary :0)

This all started as many of you know last Feb 11 when I flew out here on a one way ticket with a back pack and a prayer. That trip lasted 67 days and God provided for me every step of the way. My purpose back then was to see if the island and God wanted me here. In Short as you all know who read my 30 odd blogs Maui opened its arms to me. I even had two close friends from Oregon fly out to see me and give me a free weeks vacation in their time share, all my needs were truly met. Then one day I knew it was time to fly back home to Cynthia and my son JAQ in Portland. When the plane took of on my return home God even provided free food, drink and a movie viewer- on the way out it was Champagne from first class etc served to me by the head stewardess who was from my old Home town neighborhood of Cork city Ireland. As I flew home I really did not know if I was going to return.

I spent the next 6 to 8 weeks in Oregon selling everything . Did God give me a clear sign that I was to sell up and move to maui ? no, Cynthia knew she had a desire to go and knew God was leading us that way. Personally I just knew it was the next step and so here we is !
Next weekend Guapa Smoothies opens for business at The Kula Upcountry Market...It is Cynthia’s brain child 3 years in the planning, I`m proud of her it is her venture into the world of the self-employed one I took 14 years ago with absolutly no regrets.

Well where I go from this point on I dont know, but what I do know is by the time I cross that threshold at the end of my time here on earth into my heavenly fathers arms there will not be many emotions that I have not experienaced. I can be a stubborn Irish fighter but in the end I trully love God and he me ,
I know I will surrender my all to him after all there is no other way.
Mean while I will find a quiet spot cry it all out , then get up and keep  moving forward!

Thanks for spending time with me!!!

Cheers Michael :0)

ROAD TO MAUI # 16 Cynthia`s First Hike with Jungle John

On The Road to Maui # 16

Last Saturday I decided to part with my old writing friend who has accompanied my first thoughts in the morning as I tackle the playing field of keys. My friend has been the inspiration of many a good conversation , blog, column and the catalyst for many new relationships in my small world. He accompanied me when I first left Ireland to move to London England. Since then he has helped me in Canada, Amsterdam, and the USA where we traveled many of her great states where I loved to drive my Toyota Dolphin RV or ride my old BMW motorcycle endlessly.

Writing today with out him is a struggle, its like discovering a whole new person or moving to another culture where I don’t speak the language,I feel lost...Help God Please!!!!

Last Sunday Cynthia and I went on a hike with Our Friend Jungle John who is a professional Trail Guide here on Maui.......

privateguidemaui.com.

John has been leading hikes these past 30 years and knows the deepest parts of this fair isle that have rarely heard the footfall of a tourist or even a local for that mater.
John is an explorer of not just the island but has gone deep inside himself to release his true self. When you follow him or more to the point as you walk along side him he describes every plant, tree, flower, insect, animal , what you can eat or what will give you a heli ride to the ER! In Short Jungle John is some one who I highly recommend for a private tour, he recently guided English Royalty and that says a lot.

Well `we all met at Haiku community center. Also on Cynthia’s first Maui Hike were Bonita and Eleanor two life long friends of John, they share the same passion for nature and life as John- so we were in great company. But alas my life long friend was not with me,it had been nagging me all morning, I did not know if I was emotionally ready to tackle this adventure into the jungle of Maui with out him.
We drove to mile marker 23 on the Hana road parked grabbed our packs and headed up the long winding trail. Along the way John would stop and show Cynthia various plants and trees. When we came to the first waterfall he Guided her down the rocky slope. We all went for a dip in the pool and swam the 75 odd yards to the Falls and had the best back massage you can imagine as we backed in under the thundering cascade,it was a blast. Then we headed to the next one a mile or so up the trail. Along the way we saw some of the most spectacular breath taking scenery and views , Maui is an incredible island and if you liked JJ Abrahams series “LOST” you will love Johns tours with the only exception there is no Hatch... Hahaha.

I will let the pictures speak for themselves because without my friend I can not find the right words or flow to describe it all. I will say this Cynthia had an amazing day and is even more in love with Maui!!!
Thank You Jungle John , Bonita and Eleanor for a wonderful day and we know its just the beginning!!!

I would like to close with a few words of tribute to my former life long friend.
Juan! you have been a great and worthy companion , your Dark brown liquid sunshine flowed tenderly through my body warming many a cold morning . Cynthia`s country Argentina has sung you praises for years as with all of North America, may you live long and prosper in a true Organic state.
Here`s to you “Juan Valdez.”..Salut!!!!

Yup, I gave up Coffee!!!!

Cheers Thanks for reading Michael and Cynthia :0)

Ps : the Headaches are Gone Yayyyyyyy!!!!!!

Beware of “Ass” Bitting dog!!!

I woke at 5 am-ish with the intention of going for a walk to the beach ¾ of a mile away to watch the sun rise and then write my morning thoughts. Sounds like the perfect morning adventure on a tropical island Paradise?....Right!
Well, yes I have had some amazing morning sojourns, but this was my first time leaving the squaw at the Tee-pee on a new part of the Hawaiian North American reservation.
I did my best not to disturb our hosts sleeping dog named Michael (yup a dog named Michael! go figure) or the grazing goats. I was even careful climbing over the gate to the main road 75 yards away.

That was when it dawned on me that all the local Hawaiians owned dogs and the road to the beach was flanked by canine troops. Backing up the Hawaiian national guard were the wild Roosters that have no idea what sun rise or sunset means as they start at 9pm and every hour, its as though the FDA had a meeting and decided to dump all the worlds dysfunctional Kentucky fried rejects on Maui.

So there I stood on the other side of the gate mulling over my delima. I was surrounded by the beautiful light green 6ft tall Hawaiin wild grass, so remaining at the gate to watch the sunrise was out. If I walked the gauntlet I would alert the troops and the Cornel Sanders association. That was when Michael our Reservation dog decided to aid me in my decision. He began with a low growl, I responded with a soft whisper
“ Michael! good boy its Me”
He responded with a louder growl
“ ME WHO”
I Gave a low whistle followed by
“ Here boy come on”
Michael responded with a Loud Bark
Translation = Your arse is mine boy, whoever you are !!!

Then all Hell broke loose, Michaels friend next door a beige bull dog with a deep throaty bark that would raise the hair on your neck told The dog across the street that lived in a big yellow house with a sign that boldly declared “ BEWARE ASS BITTING DOG” that the Haole ( Hawaiian for white person) was on the move, he in turn woke the golden retriever who alerted his girlfriend at the Big Kahunas. With in seconds all illusions of a peaceful walk to the beach erupted into....

“The British are coming, the British are coming.”

I had no choice I muttered “Shite” and proceeded to walk down the
Gauntlet towards the beach. Lights came on some activated by senseors others by human touch. I stayed in the middle of the road walking slowly so as not to appear threatening and give the sniper a good friendly wave or look like a thief in flight. I bid good morning to a curious native who did not respond . Then the roosters joined in, by this time the sun was starting to rise, thats a first I thought!

Well after 150 yards I came to a right turn that led of to my Friend Israels house where my Motorcycle was parked and decided to abandon the beach as there were Hawaiians camping on the beach with the reserve guard and I had no desire to become shark fodder.

When I got to the bike Israels Dogs recognized my scent and gave me a welcome break, then I hit the starter rode of to buy coffee and watch the remainder of the sunrise up at the IOW Valley and just as I rode in there My Friend Hanalei Colledo a local kahu ( Chief) was just getting out of his truck, it made up for my stormy beginning to be greeted by a welcome smile and hug. We chatted as the sun rose above the palm trees to light a new day on Maui.

Catch ya`ll later Aloha

The Mint: Congressmen Drink and Asia is on the line as half ...: 10/7/2013 Portland, Oregon  – Pop in your mints… We recently saw reports that a number of  Congressmen reeked of alcohol  as they exited...
